Building Accounting Credibility through Growth

Cyndi Eakin

Cyndi Eakin

Cyndi Eakin serves as Chief Accounting Officer at CoStar Group, where she oversees corporate accounting, revenue reporting, tax compliance and financial reporting. Her career spans three decades across public companies and growth-focused businesses, including leadership roles in controllership, investor relations and corporate finance.

When Growth Outpaces Financial Complexity

Big growth businesses face increased complexity from new purchases and diverse revenue sources. In the case of CoStar Group, she is charged with oversight in areas like accounting policies, revenue reports and taxes for an organization that has grown through new acquisitions, additional real estate information and marketplace brands. The task also involves maintaining consistency in financial systems in a developing firm.

Prior to the position of Chief Accounting Officer, Eakin was the Senior Vice President of Investor Relations and Corporate Controller. Both positions enabled her to interact closely with the internal mechanics of financial reporting and the expectations of investors evaluating company performance.

Connecting Financial Reporting to Investor Confidence

Publicly held companies must deal with constant pressure from their shareholders, analysts and regulatory bodies. As an accounting leader, one is expected to ensure accuracy and support organizational communication about performance.

Eakin's prior experience in investor relations gives her a unique angle as an accounting leader. As someone who has worked as the voice of the CoStar Group's strategy for communicating with investors, she has firsthand knowledge of the effect that accounting practices have on external perception about business performance.

It is particularly important at times when the firm is making investments in new projects or expanding its market presence. Statements made by the accounting department comply with regulatory norms and also shape the perspective of the stakeholders regarding the allocation of capital and overall business approach.

She had previously held the position of maintaining contacts with institutional investors and analysts while helping them understand the firm’s financial standing. Her return to the accounting post creates a direct link between accounting and investor perceptions.

Building Systems That Scale

Accounting functions often become most visible when companies encounter reporting issues. Throughout her career, Eakin has worked in finance leadership positions across public and private companies. Prior to joining CoStar Group, she served as Chief Accounting Officer at Evolent Health and supported the company through its transition into the public markets. Earlier roles included financial leadership positions at KPMG and several growth-oriented businesses.

That experience appears throughout her professional trajectory. Whether overseeing accounting controls, supporting acquisition integration efforts or helping develop financial infrastructure, her focus has remained tied to scalability. Growth creates value only when reporting processes, tax structures and financial controls can expand alongside the business.

At CoStar Group, those responsibilities remain central to her mandate. The accounting organization she leads supports a company operating across information services, analytics and online marketplaces within the real estate sector.

Accounting Leadership beyond Compliance

Chief accounting officers function as a confluence of finance, governance and business strategy within organizations. The decisions made by them will have an impact on reporting quality, investors' confidence and the management’s insight into organizational success.

Eakin's career path shows that shift. Her transition from controllership roles to those dealing with investors and finance leadership is an indication of a bigger picture of the role of accountants in establishing robust foundations for organizations growing continuously. Strong accounting functions are built not only around compliance necessities but also around the ability to enhance business expansion without damaging transparency.
